Although windows’ default fonts look pretty, if you want something different, you can switch to a different font of your choice.
However, the process of changing the font is not as simple as it used to be on Windows 7 and 8. Next, we’ll walk you through how to change the default font for Windows 11.
1. How to change the default font using the Control Panel
Windows 11 includes different fonts by default that you can install and set up for free. These can all be found in the Personalization section of the control panel. Once you have chosen a font, you need to set it up using Registry Editor, which is an administrative tool in Windows.
Select a font
To get started, all you need to do is:
1. Enter Control Panel in Windows Search and click Open.
2. In the window below, select Appearance and Personalization.
3. Click preview, delete, show, and hide font options under Fonts. You should now see a list of all available fonts.
4. Select a font family, and then pick the font you want within it. Make sure you write down the font name.
You should have successfully selected the font by now. However, if you are not used to using the Control Panel, you can also use the Settings app to select fonts.
Follow these steps:
1. Press the Win+I key at the same time to open the settings.
2. Select a personalized > font.
3. In the next window, scroll down to see a list of available fonts and pick a font from it.
4. Make a note of the full name of the selected font.
2. How to install and set up new fonts from the Microsoft Store
If you don’t like any fonts in Control Panel, you can install new fonts from the Microsoft Store. The built-in store has quite a few free and paid options for you to browse.
Here’s how:
1. Launch Settings and navigate to Fonts > Personalization.
2. Scroll down in the window below and click Get more fonts in Microsoft Store.
3. Once you’re in the Microsoft Store, choose the font you like.
4. Click the “Get” button and wait for the font to download.
5. When the font download is complete, click Open and the font will be automatically added to the Fonts section of the Settings app.
6. Pay attention to the full name of the font and follow the steps we mentioned above to install it using Registry Editor.
3. How to install and set up new fonts from third-party applications
There are several font sites that offer hundreds of different free and paid options. Before you start downloading fonts from the web, it’s important to know that Windows 11 supports the following font formats:
TrueType (file extension .ttf)
TrueType Collection (file extension .ttc)
OpenType (file extension .otf)
PostScript Type 1 (file extensions .pfb + .pfm)
The best place to find free fonts on the web is Google fonts.
Once you have downloaded the font of your choice, follow these steps to install it:
1. If the font is one of the formats we have already listed above, just double-click on it to install.
2. Now, go to the Appearance and Personalization > Fonts section of the Control Panel.
3. You should see that the font is listed there. Choose it and follow the steps mentioned in the first method to complete the process.
4. Alternatively, you can right-click on the downloaded font file and select Copy.
5. Then, enter C: WindowsFonts in the search bar of the file manager and click Enter.
6. Paste the copied file on any of the empty slots in the following window and use the steps described earlier in this article to set the font.
4. How to restore the default font
If at any time in the future, you want to undo these changes and restore the default Windows fonts, please do as follows:
1. Go to the Appearance and Personalization > Fonts section of the Control Panel.
2. Select Change font settings.
3. Next, click on the “Restore Default Font Settings” button.
4. Restart your PC to make changes.
Add a personal touch to Windows
Windows 11 is well designed overall, but if you’re not happy with it, you can customize it as you please. There is no doubt that fonts play an important role in determining the appearance of your operating system, and we hope that the methods listed above will help you switch to a better font.
