OpenRA is an open-source project that rebuilt and modernizes classic real-time strategy games such as Red Alert, Command & Conquer, and Dune 2000.
They developed a flexible game engine (OpenRA engine) that provides a common platform for rebuilding and reimagining classic 2D and 2.5D RTS games. The OpenRA engine is not technically limited by the original game. It includes native support for modern operating systems such as Windows 10, macOS, and Linux, and screen resolutions, without relying on emulation or hacking, as well as integrated online multiplayer.
Games built using the OpenRA engine are called “mods.” The OpenRA development team maintains three official mods that can be downloaded from this site, but many more are developed and maintained by the OpenRA community.
Red Alert
In a world where Hitler was assassinated and the Third Reich never existed, the Soviet Union sought power over all of Europe. Allied with this evil empire, the free world faces a fiery Cold War. Red Alert mod focuses on strategy, offering a range of units and tactics to conquer land, sea, and air.
Command & Conquer
It’s no different from the original game, and if you haven’t played it, you can also try whether the stand-alone game that was popular many years ago can surprise you.
Dune 2000
Three large houses compete for a precious spice mixture. Whoever controls the spice controls the universe! Establish a foothold on the desert planet Arrakis, and your biggest threat is the environment. Dune 2000 mod is currently focused on delivering the same experience as the original game.
What else will happen?
OpenRA’s next major goal is to support second-generation command and conquer games, starting with Tiberian Sun.
Features of the game engine supporting Tiberian Sun are still under development. The mod is not included in the OpenRA installer, but the source code can be found in our GitHub repository.
Born for modern expectations
Updated gameplay designed around modern features such as attack moves, unit sophistication, and war fog
Online game with full support for mods and custom maps
Updated activities with new goals and difficulties
Native support for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Modern classic RTS game
While we love the classic RTS gameplay, multiplayer design has changed significantly since the 1990s. The OpenRA engine includes new features and game improvements that are standard in the latest RTS games:
Choose between the Right-Click and Classic Left-Click control schemes
Overhauled sidebar interface with support for hotkeys and production queues
Improved unit control with features such as attack movement and attitude
The “fog of war” that blurs the battlefield beyond the troops’ line of sight
Other modern RTS features, such as capturable technical structures and unit experience
Supports game playback and an observer interface designed specifically for online streaming games
These core changes and continued balancing improvements to support an active multiplayer community mean that OpenRA gameplay has evolved from the classic version and has been significantly influenced by later C&C games.
OpenRA is 100% free and comes bundled with three different modules. When you run the mod for the first time, the game can automatically download the original game assets or use the original game disk.
